Alan Playford: Through the Rubble

Join us for a truly unforgettable evening with Alan Playford, a man whose life embodies extraordinary service and quiet heroism.

Many remember the iconic image of Alan, then an ambulance officer, crawling from the devastation of the 1989 Newcastle earthquake's Workers Club rubble to rescue Norm Duffy – a moment that made headlines worldwide.

Known affectionately as ‘Scoop,’ this was just one chapter in his remarkable career. Alan profoundly transformed Australia’s ambulance service, modernising equipment and establishing vital helicopter rescue, reshaping paramedicine from Newcastle to the Hunter collieries.

His most defining and profound experiences, however, came far from home. Alan served on the frontlines of harrowing humanitarian crises in East Timor, the Solomon Islands, and most profoundly, post-genocide Rwanda.

Five searing months there forever deepened his understanding of trauma, loss, and the true meaning of service.

Demonstrating unwavering commitment even amidst personal struggle, Alan remained a steady presence in the darkest hours, notably during the 2003 Canberra bushfires, where his calm leadership under immense pressure earned him one of the nation's highest honours.

His powerful book, "Through the Rubble," is a deeply human account of his lifetime of service and the medics alongside him. It explores bravery, the unseen impact of trauma, and remarkable resilience – a powerful reminder of the quiet strength of those who show up when the world needs them most.
