LABOR’S COMMITMENT FOR A PERMANENT DREDGE FOR SWANSEA CHANNEL CLOSER TO REALITY

A permanent dredging solution for the Swansea Channel is one step closer, with Lake Macquarie City Council to bring forward a proposal for ongoing dredging, including plans for a sand transfer system and investigating relocating dredged sand to Blacksmiths Beach.

One of the key components of the Lake Macquarie Economic Development Package – which Labor took to the 2022 Federal Election – was $10 million in funding for Lake Macquarie City Council to purchase a dredge to provide a long-term, cost-effective solution to constantly reoccurring silting in the Channel.

The recent vote from Council means the Albanese Labor Government is one step closer to being able to deliver on this commitment.

The silting in Swansea Channel has been a massive issue in our community for years and the infrequent dredging has only provided a temporary fix.

A permanent dredge is essential for a long-term solution.

This would unlock boating and water sporting activities on Lake Macquarie, generating tourism and boosting the local economy.

The $10 million commitment is being provided under the Albanese Government’s Priority Community Infrastructure Program. The Council is continuing to work closely with Federal and State agencies to finalise the funding agreement as soon as possible.

We welcome Lake Macquarie City Council’s support for a permanent dredging solution for the Swansea Channel supported with significant Commonwealth funding.
