   MEDIA RELEASE

ESTABLISHMENT OF HOUSE SELECT COMMITTEE ON NUCLEAR ENERGY

Dan Repacholi MP, Federal Member for Hunter, Graham Perrett MP, Federal Member for Moreton, Zaneta Mascarenhas MP, Federal Member for Swan and Matt Burnell MP, Federal Member for Spence, have welcomed the establishment and their election to the House Select Committee on Nuclear Energy.

The Labor Members have heard from their constituents, as well as voters across Australia, with questions about the Opposition's mooted nuclear scheme, including requests for more information and a better understanding of how it might work in Australia's energy grid.

In the absence of any policy detail from Peter Dutton, the Government will allow the House members to establish a House Select Committee Inquiry, to hear from experts.

The Opposition have called for a debate on Australia's energy future - but this must be informed by the facts and the advice of experts.

For decades the regions like the Hunter and Lithgow in NSW, Collie in WA, Callide and Tarong in Queensland, the La Trobe Valley in Victoria and Port Augusta in South Australia have powered Australia and under the Albanese Government there is a plan to deliver good, secure and lasting clean energy jobs.

This House Select Committee will have a laser like focus on establishing the facts, so the community can know what's what when it comes to keeping the lights on and a secure future for Australia's energy communities.

The Labor MP’s look forward to carrying out the important work of the Committee in providing vital information concerning Australia's energy future and look forward to hearing from the Australian public.

Submissions will open soon and community members from across Australia are encouraged make a submission and have their say.

The committee will present its final report by no later than 30 April 2025.

In a meeting of the Committee late yesterday afternoon, Dan Repacholi MP was elected Chair of the Committee. A further meeting will be held next week to elect a Deputy Chair.

Mr Repacholi said he looks forward to working with the Members of the Committee, and hearing from people across Australia about Australia’s energy future.
